Diastema burr treatment by widening the interproximal space was developed by BA Rucker DVM of Virginia. With these PowerFloat Burr accessories, the equine veterinarian can correct many diastemata as well as periodontal problems that were previously not possible to effectively treat.

Set of 3 Kit includes:

  • Tapered Burr - initial opening of a diastema
  • Conical Burr - secondary widening of a diastema
  • Slimline Burr - 4.54mm that may be used for final opening of diastemas.
  • Threading available in regular and long lengths
  • Material composition: Solid Carbide with cutting pattern mounted on stanless steel shank
  • Compatible with PowerFloat Attachments: Guarded Right Angle, Un-Guarded Right Angle, Short Guarded Right Angle, Short Un-Guarded Right Angle

Tapered Burr:

Small tapered carbide burr to begin burring in small areas.

The taper point and aggressive cutting pattern allows the veterinarian to begin a widening path for diastema treatment. This tapered burr (sterilized) can also be used for pulp capping of injured incisor teeth.

Threads into the PowerFloat right angle attachment.

  • Material composition: Solid carbide on a steel shaft
  • shaft + burr length 0.86 inches (23 mm.)
  • burr length 0.7 inches (17.5mm.).
  • Compatible with PowerFloat Attachments: Guarded Right Angle, Un-Guarded Right Angle, Short Guarded Right Angle, Short Un-Guarded Right Angle

Conical Burr:

Tapered shape allows for gradual continued widening of a diastema after the initial opening has been made with the smaller pointed diastema burr.

Small rounded tip: Is excellent for the debridement of small periodontal pockets

Threads into the PowerFloat right angle attachment.

  • Material composition: solid carbide with cutting pattern mounted on stainless steel shank
  • Taper point configuration with aggressive cutting pattern
  • Compatible with PowerFloat Attachments: Guarded Right Angle, Un-Guarded Right Angle, Short Guarded Right Angle, Short Un-Guarded Right Angle

Slimline Burr:

Solid carbide cutting pattern for efficient widening of a diastema. This burr is smaller in width than the 6.33 cylindrical burr and so can be used in horses with a chronically occurring diastema that may have pulp horns close to the interproximal space.

Radial cutting pattern for efficient cutting of interproximal space in diastemas that do not respond to conservative treatment and correction of malocclusions.

  • Material composition: carbide
  • Stainless steel threaded base
  • 4.54 mm. diameter
  • Total burr length 1.12 inches (28.5 mm.)
  • Cutting height 0.8 inches (21 mm.)
  • Compatible with PowerFloat Attachments: Guarded Right Angle, Un-Guarded Right Angle, Short Guarded Right Angle, Short Un-Guarded Right Angle

Periodontal Burr:

Rectangular shaped solid carbide burr: rounded end with aggressive cutting pattern.

Diastema treatment final widening: This .25 inch (6.33 mm) diameter burr is used as the 3rd and final diastema widening procedure in geriatric horses to create a final space width of 6.33 mm. This procedure, first described by BA Rucker DVM of Virginia, has helped the dental comfort of many geriatric horses when more conservative treatment such as removal of malocclusions and local flushing and antibiotic therapy is no longer effective.

Threads into the right angle of the Powerfloat.

Periodontal Pockets: Rounded end of burr is also used to smooth jagged edges of the periodontal pocket and allow food material to escape from the site.

  • Material composition: Solid carbide burr mounted on a stainless steel shaft.
  • .25 inch (6.33 mm.) diameter.
  • Total burr length 1 inch (25 mm)
  • Total cutting portion 3/4 inch (20 mm.)
  • Compatible with PowerFloat Attachments: Guarded Right Angle, Un-Guarded Right Angle, Short Guarded Right Angle, Short Un-Guarded Right Angle
